TOURMALINE
My favorite gem after Opal. The colors are great, and the variety endless. The basic molecule is complex and flexible, so it incorporates various elements as it grows, and each lends a color to the palette. They are rarer than Diamonds, and found primarily in pegmatites [coarse grained granite]. I've collected some in Maine, and have friends mining in California, but most of these come from Brazil, Nigeria, and Afganistan. [Remember those "caves" Osama was allegedly hiding in? The US was blowing up gem mines!]
